GROWING THINGS
here in this desert we are fortunate to have a COMMUNITY GARDEN. A man from Oregon, a master gardener, took on a big project; to grow food on this point of land made up of mostly sand and volcanic rock. There is no topsoil, just sandy dirt. He had a vision of a garden where people of the community would work and share and all would benefit. It has come to pass after 4 years of hard work building soil from worm castings, plant compost, goat manure, straw and what ever else he could fine that looks like soil. He built the first gardens in his own yard as he had 2 large lots. He enlisted 3 Local Mexicans, happy, hard working guys who sing all day. We now pay $100 a year pr family and work in the garden on thursdays to get the bounty. It is a wonderful time to visit with friends and get up close and personal with terra firma. We are taking home large bags of salad greens, tomatoes, last week a few potatoes, cilantro, now and then some squash, lots of yummy fresh vegetables. I am such a fan of eating locally. It is a lot easier here but we still get things that need a passport, it seems strange that food is shipped around the world. Do I really need mandarin oranges from China? No. A simple diet of fish, eggs and vegetables suits me fine. I have my own garden too so I have plenty of fresh food.
See the photo with the blue marble, I brought it to the garden because the ocean is the reason most of us are here in this town.
you can find out more about this fun project to protect our ocean planet bluemarbles.org is on my blogroll. and you can read about the blue marble on the link to my friend Catharine’s blog also on my list. She takes beautiful and creative photos and is active in several planet caring efforts.

MY BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER COMES…in a race
I have a daughter named Laralee, we call her Lara and LaLa. She is living with a guy named Ken, a fun loving, desert racing, beer loving, fisherman, a great dad to his 9 year old daughter Aspen, we just love having Ken come to our house.
In May they did a Baja race, 1000 miles from Mexicali to LaPaz. We happen to be on the race route so what a good idea to have Lara and her Dad, Cal race one leg together. Lara has been racing in powderpuff events for a year or more and loves the challenge of intense driving. We met at in a town 100 miles north, Ken raced the morning section. We were so excited to see the car show up at the designated meeting place..they made it!! Cal was so excited he put his jumpsuit on an hour too early.
The race truck is a 1985 Ford Bronco, the race is a rally, 3 days to get there with overnight hotel stops. The rally is a small group of cars made before 1990. It started in 1967 and has not been done since 1987. Ken has always wanted to to the race so here we are cheering him on and our daughter is in the car. The mexican kids in the town square were getting stickers from Ken, they realized he was not in his race car as the race was passing through the town at that moment. I told them in Spanish that he gave his car to his novia…girlfriend to drive, he was tired, much laughter. What a wonderful day we had and they made it 225 miles in 5 hrs, over the desert on bad roads, over a mountain on worse roads, then 40 miles on the highway in the car that was now running on 7 cylinders and having serious front end problems. There was a welder nearby where we stayed so the guys stayed up most of the night to fix the car. The 3rd day they took off for laPaz and made it, finished second in their class and had a great time. They then came to our house for some beach time and fishing. I love to have people at the house to cook for, it makes me so happy.
